This includes the machinery needed to implement and support the widespread use of hydrogen fuels.

Demonstration and Deployment of Alternative Fuel Technologies

CLEAN POWER is a leader in demonstration, evaluation and commercialization of hydrogen and methane technologies for clean transportation, alternative fuels, and distributed power applications.

Team members have designed and constructed fuel infrastructure for hydrogen and H2-CH4 blends, hydrogen and methane production from renewable feedstock, hydrogen fuel cells, and hydrogen engines.

Project experience with Hydrogen, methane, Hy-5, Hythane, hybrid-electric and electric technologies includes:

1. Codes & Standards Development

ISO Technical Committee 197 — Hydrogen Energy Systems,
WG 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 & 7

Team members have served on working groups to develop international standards for vehicular LH2 fuel system interface, LH2 storage tanks, hydrogen fuel specifications, LH2 multimodal container tanks, hydrogen vehicle refueling stations, and basic safety requirements.

2. Hydrogen Vehicle and Infrastructure Fueling Demonstrations

Team members have planned, designed, fabricated, and installed small-scale hydrogen fuel infrastructure as follows:

  • Compressed Hythane (15% H2 - 85% CH4) Fuel Stations — Denver, Colorado & Erie, Pennsylvania
  • Compressed Hydrogen Fuel Stations for Laboratory Facilities — West Palm Beach, Florida

3. Hydrogen Engine & Fuel Cell Development Applications

Stealth Auxiliary Power Unit,
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency

Designed and constructed a 15kW power unit based on metal platelet PEM fuel cell technology, including compressed hydrogen fuel system designed for a hybrid-electric pick-up truck.

Demonstration of Electric and Hybrid Electric Vehicles for Eight Florida Counties
Florida Energy Office — Tallahassee, Florida

Developed a program to demonstrate 8 battery electric vehicles (EVs). Operated a test vehicle in a fleet demonstration for six years. Repair and maintenance of a fleet of battery electric vehicles.

Test and Evaluation of Various Fuel Cell Stacks
Energy Partners, West Palm Beach, Florida

Designed and constructed test apparatus and developed testing protocols for various types and sizes of fuel cell stacks, including phosphoric acid, alkaline and PEM.

Design, Construction and/or Testing of PEMFC in Marine, Automotive and Industrial Applications
Royal Australian Navy, Material Research Lab; Energy Partners, West Palm Beach, Florida; and South Coast Air Quality Management District, Diamond Bar, California

Designed, constructed and/or tested integrated oxygen and/or air breathing PEMFC stacks into various power applications, including manned submersibles, remote marine power supplies, land vehicles, unmanned aircraft, unmanned submersibles, power tools, and electronics.

4. Development of Commercial Hydrogen and Natural Gas Fuel Infrastructure

Clean Cities Programs

Worked with USDOE to develop the Atlanta Clean Cities Program, the first Clean City. Supported formation of Gold Coast, SunCoast, and Space Coast, Florida, Clean Cities Initiatives. Ongoing participation in market development activities, with emphasis on hydrogen, natural gas, and hybrid-electric drive technologies.

Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV) Fueling Infrastructure, GA, FL, CA, NV, AZ and TX
Tren*Fuels, Inc. and FleetStar, Austin, TX

Helped plan and install eleven automated, public access NGV fuel stations.

Feasibility Study: Natural Gas Vehicle Conversion
for Mexico City, USTDA, WDC

Prepared the English draft of the feasibility study and multimedia CD-ROM presentation for the Mexico City natural gas vehicle (NGV) conversion program. The study recommended investment of $1.1 billion to convert 138,000 medium and light duty fleet vehicles to NGVs and construction of over 700 private and public access refueling stations. Program would reduce vehicular emissions of CO and O3 precursors by 1,300,000 tons/yr.

Production of LNG from Digester Biogas –
Johnson Controls, Broward County, Florida

Prepared feasibility analysis and plans, specifications and cost-estimates for a project to convert biogas produced by anaerobic digestion of municipal sludge into liquid methane (LNG) and liquid carbon dioxide (LCO2).

5. NGV (LNG & CNG) Market Assessments and Business Plans

Investor and Municipal Owned Electric and Gas Utilities — Florida

Developed business plans for NGV refueling infrastructure 32 Florida counties, including analysis of fleet vehicle locations, incentives, and mandates for fleet vehicle conversions.

Liquefied Natural Gas Vehicle Technology
Jack B. Kelley, Inc. — Amarillo, Texas

Provided marketing and sales support to the leading supplier of cryogenic equipment and services for heavy-duty truck operations, including LNG storage tanks, vehicular tanks and automated LNG and LNG-to-LCNG refueling systems. JBK has installed more than ten LNG fuel stations, including the LAX LNG shuttle bus fleet; Santa Fe-Union Pacific Railroad switcher locomotives in Commerce, CA; JBK Terminals in Woods Cross, UT, San Manual, AZ; and Denver, CO.

LNG Import Terminal at Elba Island -- Southern Natural Gas,
Savannah, Georgia

Provided engineering services to obtain environmental permits for terminal dredging and thermal discharges from gasifier. Performed facility fire safety review and marine safety review.

Performance Evaluation of LNG Fuels in Heavy-Duty Trucks
Jack B. Kelley, Inc. -- Amarillo, TX, Utah Energy Office — Salt Lake City, UT
National Renewable Energy Laboratory — Golden, CO

Jack B. Kelley, Inc. operates a fleet of dedicated LNG Class 8 tractors in line-haul service at several locations in Arizona, Utah, and California. Supported contract to report vehicle performance to NREL AFDC. Wrote and edited training manuals for fleet owners, executives, drivers and operators.

Market Development for Thermal Acoustic LNG Production System -- TADOPTR
Cryenco -- Denver, CO, LANL -- Los Alamos, NM, NIST -- Boulder, CO

Provided market development support for a revolutionary new natural gas liquefaction system under development by a leading cryogenic equipment manufacturer. The system converts heat energy into refrigeration in a device with no moving parts and no seals. The device integrates recently developed thermal acoustics technology with modified Stirling cycle refrigeration technology into a simple device — the Thermal Acoustic Device Orifice Pulse Tube Refrigerator — the TADOPTR.

Production of Methane Fuels from Dairy Waste
Florida Energy Office – Tallahassee, Florida

Developed preliminary plans and business analysis for integrated dairy waste management systems based on anaerobic digester technologies. Objective was to control pollution by minimizing use of water, recycling nutrients to the land, converting waste solids into fertilizer, and producing electricity and/or fuel from methane-rich biogas.
